Promotions in judo are the result of three things: (1) time in rank, (2) demonstrated skill in free-play and competition, and (3) demonstration of techniques in front of a testing committee. Individuals progress through the ranks at their own pace; and it is assumed that every club member is working toward his/her next promotion. Judo ranks are recognized world-wide, so moving to another judo school does not mean having to start again at white belt.
